David Beckham and Darius Vassell missed from the spot as England bowed out 6–5 on penalties, despite standout performances from Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard.
 
The shirt was also carried into the 2006 World Cup in Germany, where England once again reached the quarter-finals before falling to Portugal in another penalty shoot-out.
